Is being woke a glitch in the matrix?

What do people want?

Learning & growing together seems like a good place to start to make democracy work. I’m not affiliated with a party. Various reasons back this decision, but what matters is that as long as we are in a two party system I will always vote in the favor of basic civil rights & freedoms.

I was born into the world on a Thursday, female. white, religion of Catholic already chosen, and politics were seldomly talked about around kids. Although party wasn’t decided for me in my family it’s interesting what the majority is. You know, it’s funny, growing up there wasn’t a lot of baggage (for me) that came along with being female OR white. (That’s privilege) It was the Catholic part that carried the weight.

While signing the dotted line, raising your right hand and stating the oath of enlistment IS a choice. Becoming a Marine IS just who I was meant to be. I’ll break it down BARNEY style. I got “the calling”. A choice I never regretted to this day. However, after how yesterday came to a close I finally found a silver lining to my discharge. 78 PLUS executive orders rescinded. Without those protections of the Biden era executive orders, the lack of regard for all American people 1. does not keep us safe and 2. does not keep us safe.

I went to the VA last week here in Asheville, NC. This February will be 19 years since deploying to the senseless war on Iraq. I’ve been a patient at somewhere around six VA hospitals in 17 years. VA’s are all operated differently. Wait times vary, patient care varies, being a basic human varies. This is all very frustrating, which on many occasions has turned into anger. BUT. this is the first time I walked into a VA and felt calm? That is simply the vibe of Asheville even amidst a disaster. The humans were kind, and curious but not intrusive. The care exceeded any expectation I ever had, and the facility. There was a gentleman playing the piano right under…the…Christmas tree! It’s still up! or is it up already? Because it’s 21 days in to this new year but it might as well be day 356.

I keep a running list of thoughts, jot downs, ideas. On November 3, driving in the passenger side of the Jeep I see a man playing what seemed to be the recorder. Do you remember those? Do kids still play those things? That man WAS HAPPY! that morning I was on my way to a doctor appointment. We didn’t stop. The word should is a strong word, but we should have stopped. Did he find that recorder? Did he buy that recorder with the money some kind human gave to him on the street? I hope he somehow knows he made an impact on me. The moral of this story is to simply love thy neighbor for we do not know the heaviness held in their heart.

I don’t know what the future holds for us. Right now, we are in a magical little bubble of blue. Asheville is the meaning of love, of community. We do our best at wishing everyone well because MLK jr. says it best “HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE, ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT”
